Prep wrestling: Suda edges Prunty for Big South 126-pound crown

WASECA -- Michael Suda of Pipestone Area defeated Jacob Prunty of Worthington in a high-caliber showdown of outstanding senior wrestlers Saturday at the Big South Conference Tournament in Waseca.

The championship match at 126 pounds pitted Suda -- a two-time state Class A champion -- against Prunty, who hopes to win one this year in Class AA. Suda prevailed in a 5-3 decision.

Both Suda and Arrows teammate Hunter Burnett -- another two-time state champ -- won individual championships at the conference tourney, with Burnett getting his at 132 pounds. And a third Arrow, Garret Ploeger, captured the 182-pound tourney title by beating Worthington’s Mason Byrne by a 6-2 decision in the finals.

But Worthington did not have to go home without some first-place hardware. Jacob Neuberger defeated Marshall’s Jaiden Bahr in a fall in 2:42 to dramatically secure the title at 195 pounds.

Another area matmen who placed first was Jacob Tvinnereim of Jackson County Central at 152 pounds.

Worthington also got a second-place from 106-pounder Damon Schutz. Teammate Marcos Herrera was fourth at 285. Two other Trojans, Ethan Pavelko at 145 and Kyle Mullaney at 170, placed fifth.

Windom/Mountain Lake saw three of its wrestlers place second: Brett Willaby at 113 pounds, Alex Borsgard at 145 and Jesse Jepsen at 170.

Thirteen teams took part in the tournament. Fairmont/Martin County West compiled the most team points, 210.5. Marshall was second with 148.5. Pipestone Area was third (121.5) and Worthington fourth (118.0).

Here’s a rundown of the area wrestlers who placed, by weight class:

106 -- Damon Schutz (Worthington), placed second, losing to Lucas Jagodzinske (Fairmont/Martin County West) 7-0 in the finals. Riley Cowell (Luverne) placed fourth.

113 -- Bretty Willaby (Windom/Mountain Lake) placed second, losing in the finals to Jaxson Rohman (Fairmont/Martin County West) 4-2.

120 -- Grant Budden (Pipestone Area) was third. Kade Sammons (Windom/Mountain Lake) was fifth.

126 -- Michael Suda (Pipestone Area) defeated Jacob Prunty (Worthington) 5-3 in the finals. Ethan Hendrickson (Jackson County Central) placed fourth.

132 -- Hunter Burnett (Pipestone Area) won with a victory over Justin Sampson (Waseca) in a fall in 4:53 in the finals. Aaron Munoz (Jackson County Central) was fourth. Tucker Oeltjenbruns (Luverne) was fifth.

138 -- Eric Lange (Pipestone Area) placed sixth.

145 -- Alex Borsgard (Windom/Mountain Lake) placed second, losing to Hunter Ranweiler (New Ulm) 4-0 in the finals. Ethan Pavelko (Worthington) was fifth.

152 -- Jacob Tvinnereim (Jackson County Central) defeated Tanner Stark (New Ulm) 14-6 to win.

160 -- No area wrestlers placed.

170 -- Jesse Jepsen (Windom/Mountain Lake) placed second, falling to Collin Steuber (Fairmont/Martin County West) in a technical fall in 5:09 in the championship match. Kyle Mullaney (Worthington) placed fifth and Eli Edlin (Jackson County Central) was sixth. Mullaney decisioned Edlin 5-4 for fifth place.

182 -- Garrett Ploeger (Pipestone Area) won the weight class, beating second-place Mason Byrne (Worthington) 6-2 in the finals.

195 -- Jacob Neuberger (Worthington) captured the crown, pinning Jaiden Bahr (Marshall) in 2:42 in the finals.

220 -- Jamison VanderWal (Pipestone Area) was fourth.

285 -- Marcos Herrera (Worthington) placed fourth.
